How to Change Surname and Address in Aadhaar After Marriage 2026

After marriage, a person may want to update their surname, name or residential address in Aadhaar. The process for a name change is different from the process for an address update. UIDAI allows eligible address updates online, while name changes generally require a visit to an authorised Aadhaar Seva Kendra or enrolment and update centre.

Important: Marriage does not automatically change your Aadhaar details. You must submit an update request and the documents required for the particular change.

1. How to Change Surname in Aadhaar After Marriage

If you want to add your spouse surname, change your surname or update your name after marriage, follow the applicable name-update procedure. Name changes are not generally available through the standard online address-update service.

  1. Visit the official UIDAI website and locate an authorised Aadhaar Seva Kendra or enrolment and update centre.
  2. Carry your existing Aadhaar and the documents required to support the post-marriage name change.
  3. Ask the operator for the appropriate name-update service and complete the prescribed form or declaration.
  4. Submit the registered marriage certificate or other evidence accepted under the current UIDAI rules. An additional affidavit or other document may be required depending on the nature of the change and applicable instructions.
  5. Check that the requested name matches the supporting documents before confirming the application.
  6. Pay the applicable fee and collect the acknowledgement slip containing the update request number.
  7. Track the request through the official UIDAI portal and download the updated e-Aadhaar after approval.

UIDAI may apply different requirements to a minor spelling correction, a surname addition or removal, and a full name change. Check the current instructions before visiting the centre.

2. Documents for Surname Change After Marriage

Depending on the requested change and current UIDAI requirements, you may need:

  • Existing Aadhaar card or Aadhaar number.
  • Registered marriage certificate or another accepted document proving the name change.
  • Accepted identity proof showing the relevant name details, where required.
  • Additional affidavit or declaration if required under the applicable UIDAI instructions.
  • Original documents for verification at the Aadhaar centre.

A marriage certificate does not guarantee that every requested name format will be accepted. The name entered in Aadhaar must comply with the supporting-document rules. Check the latest accepted-document list on the UIDAI website.

3. How to Change Address in Aadhaar Online After Marriage

If you have moved to your spouse’s home or another residence after marriage, you can request an address update online if you meet the portal requirements.

  1. Open the official myAadhaar portal.
  2. Log in using your Aadhaar number and the OTP sent to your registered mobile number, as required.
  3. Select the supported address-update service.
  4. Enter your new residential address carefully and check the spelling in English and the local language.
  5. Upload an accepted proof-of-address document, if applying through the document-based method.
  6. Review the information and submit the request after completing the required authentication and payment steps.
  7. Save the Service Request Number (SRN) or acknowledgement details to track your application.
  8. Once approved, download your updated e-Aadhaar from the official portal.

4. What If You Do Not Have Address Proof in Your Own Name?

If you live with your spouse or another family member and do not have an accepted address document in your own name, check whether the Head of Family (HoF) based address-update method is available for your case.

The HoF method requires the relevant family relationship details and the Head of Family’s consent or approval under UIDAI rules. The address on the Head of Family’s Aadhaar is used for the update. Follow the instructions displayed on the official portal or Aadhaar app.

5. Documents for Address Update

The accepted documents depend on the update method and UIDAI’s current list. Examples of potentially acceptable documents include:

  • A valid passport or other accepted government document containing the required address details.
  • An eligible bank statement or passbook, where accepted under current rules.
  • An accepted utility bill or government-issued address document that meets the validity requirements.
  • A valid document accepted by UIDAI for address verification in your own name.
  • Head of Family details and consent, where the HoF method is applicable.

Not every document is accepted for every update type. Confirm the latest list at UIDAI before uploading any document.

6. Aadhaar Update Fees and Processing Time

Fees depend on the type of update and the current UIDAI fee schedule. Check the amount shown on the official portal or confirmed by the authorised centre before payment. Do not rely on outdated fee information from unofficial websites.

Processing time may vary depending on document verification and the nature of the request. Submission of an application does not mean the change has already been approved.

7. How to Check Aadhaar Update Status

  1. Open the official myAadhaar portal.
  2. Select the update-status or request-tracking option.
  3. Enter the SRN, URN or other reference number provided on your acknowledgement, as requested by the portal.
  4. Review whether the request is under process, approved or rejected.
  5. If rejected, read the reason and follow the official instructions for correction or resubmission.
