What Are Gazetted Holidays?

Gazetted holidays are officially notified public holidays. Central Government offices follow the applicable DoPT instructions, while state government offices, banks, schools and private employers may follow separate calendars. A holiday appearing on the Central Government list does not automatically mean that every bank, private company or state office will remain closed.

Gazetted Holidays vs Restricted Holidays

Gazetted holidays are the notified holidays observed by the relevant office. Restricted holidays are optional holidays that eligible employees may select according to the rules applicable to their organisation. For Central Government offices in Delhi/New Delhi, employees may choose two holidays from the notified Restricted Holidays list. Other locations may have a separately finalised list.

How to Check the Official Government Holiday Calendar 2027

  1. Open the Government of India holiday calendar at India.gov.in Holiday Calendar.
  2. Select the year 2027 and the relevant month.
  3. Check whether each holiday is marked Gazetted (G) or Restricted (R).
  4. For office-specific holidays, check the latest notification issued by your department, state government or employer.
  5. For a Central Government holiday order, consult the Department of Personnel and Training website at dopt.gov.in.

Are Government Offices Closed on All Gazetted Holidays?

Closure depends on the relevant organisation and the official holiday schedule. Some essential services may operate under separate arrangements. State government offices may also observe additional local holidays or different dates for certain festivals.
