Why Are Fresh Municipal Elections Being Held in Punjab?

The Supreme Court, through its order dated September 28, 2026, directed fresh elections in 50 municipal wards after considering findings of a Fact-Finding Commission headed by former High Court Judge Justice Nirmaljit Kaur.

The Commission examined serious irregularities in the earlier municipal election process, including obstruction of candidates during nominations, alleged coercion and other election-related complaints.

The original order affected 28 Patiala wards, 15 Bagha Purana wards and seven Dharamkot wards. A subsequent Supreme Court modification dated October 16, 2026 added Patiala Ward Nos. 15 and 58, taking the affected total to 52 wards.
