UPS vs NPS Calculator 2026: Difference Between Unified Pension Scheme and National Pension System

UPS vs NPS Calculator 2026 helps Central Government employees understand the difference between the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) and the National Pension System (NPS) in terms of pension calculation, contribution, retirement benefits, family payout and investment structure.

Important

UPS and NPS do not use the same pension calculation method. UPS has a prescribed assured-payout framework, while NPS retirement income depends on the accumulated corpus and applicable annuity arrangements.

What is UPS?

Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) is a pension framework approved by the Central Government as an option under the NPS framework for eligible Central Government employees. It provides an assured-payout structure along with provisions for family payout and minimum assured payout.

UPS came into effect from 1 April 2025 for eligible Central Government employees covered under the applicable rules.

What is NPS?

National Pension System (NPS) is a defined-contribution pension system. Contributions from the employee and government are accumulated in the pension account and invested in market-linked assets.

The retirement benefit depends on the accumulated corpus, investment returns and applicable withdrawal and annuity rules.

UPS vs NPS: Key Differences

Feature UPS NPS
Full Form Unified Pension Scheme National Pension System
Nature Assured-payout framework Defined-contribution system
Pension calculation Based on prescribed formula Based on corpus and applicable annuity
Investment returns Not directly used to determine the assured payout formula Market-linked
Retirement corpus According to UPS rules Contributions plus investment returns
Family benefit Prescribed family payout Subject to applicable NPS/annuity rules
Minimum assured payout ₹10,000 per month subject to conditions No UPS-style assured minimum pension formula

How is UPS Pension Calculated?

For a full assured payout, the UPS formula is based on the average basic pay during the last 12 months before retirement and qualifying service.

Full Assured Payout

For 25 years or more of qualifying service, the assured payout is based on approximately 50% of the average basic pay during the last 12 months, subject to the prescribed UPS conditions.

For qualifying service below 25 years, the assured payout is calculated proportionately according to the applicable rules.

UPS Minimum Assured Payout

Eligible employees with at least 10 years of qualifying service are covered by a provision for a ₹10,000 per month minimum assured payout, subject to applicable conditions.

UPS Family Payout

After the death of an eligible subscriber, the spouse is entitled to a prescribed family payout under the UPS framework.

Family Payout

The UPS framework specifies family payout for the spouse at 60% of the admissible payout, subject to applicable rules.

How is NPS Pension Calculated?

NPS does not use a fixed percentage-of-salary pension formula like the UPS assured-payout formula. Retirement income depends on the accumulated pension corpus and the applicable withdrawal and annuity rules.

  • Current age
  • Retirement age
  • Monthly contribution
  • Expected annual return
  • Contribution growth
  • Retirement corpus
  • Annuity allocation
  • Expected annuity rate

NPS Calculator Example

Suppose the retirement NPS corpus is ₹1 crore and 40% is used for annuity purchase under the applicable rules. If an illustrative annuity rate of 6% is assumed, annual annuity income would be approximately ₹2.4 lakh, or about ₹20,000 per month.

This is only an illustrative calculation. Actual NPS retirement income depends on the accumulated corpus, applicable withdrawal rules and annuity rate.

What Inputs Are Needed for a UPS vs NPS Calculator?

  • Current basic pay
  • Average basic pay during the final 12 months
  • Qualifying service
  • Current age and retirement age
  • NPS contribution
  • Expected investment return
  • Estimated retirement corpus
  • Annuity percentage
  • Expected annuity rate
