Social Security October 2026 Payment Dates: Wednesday Schedule Explained

Social Security beneficiaries receive their October 2026 payments on different dates depending on their benefit type, birth date and when they began receiving benefits. Most people who follow the regular Wednesday schedule will receive their payment on October 14, October 21 or October 28. Other beneficiaries receive payments earlier in the month. This guide explains the official schedule, who qualifies for each date and what to do if your deposit does not arrive as expected.

October 2026 Social Security payment dates

  • October 1, Thursday: Regular October SSI payment.
  • October 2, Friday: Social Security beneficiaries who qualify for the third-of-the-month payment schedule.
  • October 14, Wednesday: Eligible beneficiaries born from the 1st through the 10th.
  • October 21, Wednesday: Eligible beneficiaries born from the 11th through the 20th.
  • October 28, Wednesday: Eligible beneficiaries born from the 21st through the 31st.
  • October 30, Friday: November SSI payment issued early because November 1 falls on a Sunday.

These dates follow the Social Security Administration payment calendar. The date that applies to you depends on your benefit type and payment group.

Official Social Security payment schedule for October 2026

The Social Security Administration (SSA) uses a monthly payment schedule for retirement, survivors and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits. Many beneficiaries who started receiving benefits after April 1997 are assigned a Wednesday payment date based on the birth date of the worker whose earnings record determines the benefit.

Payment date Day Who generally receives payment
October 1, 2026 Thursday SSI recipients receiving their regular October payment
October 2, 2026 Friday Beneficiaries on the third-of-the-month Social Security schedule
October 14, 2026 Wednesday Birth dates from the 1st through the 10th
October 21, 2026 Wednesday Birth dates from the 11th through the 20th
October 28, 2026 Wednesday Birth dates from the 21st through the 31st
October 30, 2026 Friday SSI recipients receiving their November payment early

The dates shown for SSI refer to the month for which the benefit is payable. The October 30 deposit is the November 2026 SSI payment, not an additional October benefit. Most beneficiaries receive one regular monthly payment for each benefit program, although the calendar can place payments for two different benefit months within the same calendar month.

Who gets Social Security on October 14, 21 or 28?

For many retirement, survivors and SSDI beneficiaries, the payment date is determined by the date of birth of the person on whose earnings record the benefits are based. The Wednesday schedule generally applies to people who began receiving Social Security benefits under the rules introduced in May 1997 and who are not covered by an exception.

October 14, 2026: Second Wednesday

If the relevant birth date falls between the 1st and 10th of any month, your regular October payment is scheduled for Wednesday, October 14.

October 21, 2026: Third Wednesday

If the relevant birth date falls between the 11th and 20th, your regular October payment is scheduled for Wednesday, October 21.

October 28, 2026: Fourth Wednesday

If the relevant birth date falls between the 21st and 31st, your regular October payment is scheduled for Wednesday, October 28.

For example, if the worker whose record determines your benefit was born on October 7, the regular Wednesday schedule generally places the payment on October 14. If that worker was born on October 17, the payment generally falls on October 21.

The relevant birth date is not always the beneficiary birth date. For a spouse or dependent receiving benefits on another worker record, SSA uses the payment rules applicable to that record. Check your benefit notice or personal account if you are uncertain which schedule applies.

Why some Social Security payments arrive on October 2

Not everyone follows the Wednesday schedule. Certain beneficiaries receive Social Security on the third day of each month. This group generally includes people who began receiving benefits before May 1997, people who receive both Social Security and SSI, and some beneficiaries covered by other SSA exceptions.

October 3, 2026, falls on a Saturday. When the regular third-of-the-month payment date falls on a Saturday, Sunday or federal holiday, SSA generally schedules payment for the preceding business day. That makes Friday, October 2, the applicable date for this group.

If you normally receive benefits on the third of the month, do not assume your payment is missing simply because it arrives on October 2 instead. The earlier date follows the standard payment rule.

SSI payment dates in October 2026

Supplemental Security Income is a separate needs-based program with its own payment schedule. SSI is generally paid on the first day of the month for which the payment is due, unless that day falls on a weekend or federal holiday.

Deposit date Payment month Explanation
October 1, 2026 October SSI The first day of October is a Thursday.
October 30, 2026 November SSI November 1 is a Sunday, so the payment is scheduled for the preceding business day.

Receiving two SSI deposits in October does not mean that SSA has awarded an extra monthly benefit. The October 30 payment is issued early for November. There is no regular SSI payment scheduled for Sunday, November 1.

If you receive both SSI and Social Security, you may have different payment dates for the two programs. Check each payment separately and use your official SSA schedule to confirm the dates that apply to your record.

Does the October payment date affect your benefit amount?

The payment calendar determines when your money is scheduled to be delivered. It does not, by itself, increase or reduce the monthly benefit amount. The amount you receive depends on the benefit program and your eligibility or earnings record.

For 2026, Social Security and SSI benefits received a 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA). The adjustment took effect for Social Security benefits payable in January 2026. SSI payments reflecting the adjustment began on December 31, 2025, because January 1 is a federal holiday.

Your individual payment can still differ because of Medicare premiums, tax withholding, benefit adjustments, overpayment recovery or changes in eligibility. If the amount is different from what you expected, review your benefit notice and contact SSA if you need an explanation.

What to do if your October Social Security payment is late

If your scheduled payment has not appeared, first confirm that you are checking the correct payment date. Then follow these steps.

1

Check your payment schedule

Confirm whether your payment is due October 2, October 14, October 21 or October 28. SSI has a separate schedule, including the October 30 early payment for November.

2

Contact your bank or financial institution

Check recent transactions and ask whether the deposit is pending. Confirm that your direct deposit account remains open and that your account information has not changed.

3

Check your Social Security account

Sign in to your secure account to review benefit information and available payment details.

Contact Social Security if the payment remains missing

If your payment does not arrive when expected, SSA generally advises waiting three additional mailing days before contacting the agency. You can call 1-800-772-1213 or use the official website for assistance. TTY users can call 1-800-325-0778.

Can you change your Social Security payment date?

For most beneficiaries, the payment date is assigned under SSA rules based on the benefit type, filing history and applicable birth-date schedule. You generally cannot select a different Wednesday simply because another date would be more convenient.

Some beneficiaries paid on the third of the month may be able to request a change to a Wednesday cycle if they meet SSA conditions and all beneficiaries receiving benefits on the same record agree. Such a change can be permanent, so contact SSA before making a decision.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Social Security payment dates for October 2026?

The regular Wednesday dates are October 14 for relevant birth dates from the 1st through the 10th, October 21 for birth dates from the 11th through the 20th, and October 28 for birth dates from the 21st through the 31st. Some beneficiaries are paid October 2 under the third-of-the-month schedule.

Why is my Social Security payment scheduled for October 2?

Certain beneficiaries receive Social Security on the third of the month. Because October 3, 2026, is a Saturday, the payment is scheduled for Friday, October 2.

When is SSI paid in October 2026?

The regular October SSI payment is scheduled for Thursday, October 1. The November SSI payment is scheduled early for Friday, October 30, because November 1 falls on a Sunday.

Why am I receiving two SSI deposits in October?

The first deposit is for October and the second, scheduled for October 30, is the November payment issued early. It is not an extra benefit payment.

Do all SSDI recipients get paid on the same Wednesday?

No. Many SSDI recipients follow the Wednesday schedule based on the relevant birth date, but beneficiaries covered by exceptions may receive payments on a different date.

What should I do if my October Social Security deposit is missing?

Check your scheduled date and bank account first. If the payment remains missing, SSA generally advises allowing three additional mailing days before contacting the agency at 1-800-772-1213.

Does the payment calendar change my benefit amount?

No. The calendar determines the scheduled delivery date. Your benefit amount is calculated separately and can be affected by program rules, Medicare premiums, withholding or other adjustments.

Bottom line

Social Security payment dates in October 2026 depend on your payment group. Many retirement, survivor and SSDI beneficiaries will receive their money on October 14, October 21 or October 28. Certain beneficiaries receive payment on October 2, while SSI recipients receive their October payment on October 1 and their November payment early on October 30.

Check the official SSA calendar rather than relying on a general payment-date headline. If your deposit is missing after the scheduled date and the recommended waiting period, contact Social Security or your financial institution to investigate.
