JEE Main 2027 Age Limit and 12th Percentage Criteria

Candidates preparing for JEE Main 2027 should understand the age limit, Class 12 passing-year requirements and minimum percentage criteria before applying. The National Testing Agency (NTA) has published the JEE Main 2027 examination information and eligibility details.

There is no age limit for appearing in JEE Main 2027. Candidates who passed Class 12 or an equivalent examination in 2025 or 2026, or are appearing in 2027, are eligible under the announced qualifying-year criteria. There is also no minimum Class 12 percentage requirement merely to appear for the JEE Main examination.

JEE Main 2027 Eligibility: Quick Overview

  • Conducting Authority: National Testing Agency (NTA)
  • Age Limit: No age limit for appearing in the examination
  • Eligible Class 12 Passing Years: 2025 and 2026
  • Appearing Candidates: Class 12 students appearing in 2027
  • Minimum Percentage for JEE Main Exam: No minimum percentage specified for appearing
  • 75% Criteria: Historically associated with admission to NITs, IIITs and other participating institutes, not basic JEE Main exam eligibility
  • Official Website: jeemain.nta.nic.in

1. JEE Main 2027 Age Limit

There is no minimum or maximum age limit for candidates appearing in JEE Main 2027. Candidates can apply irrespective of their age if they satisfy the prescribed educational qualification and qualifying-year conditions.

However, candidates should remember that individual institutions may prescribe separate age-related admission conditions. Therefore, applicants should check the admission rules of the institute in which they want to take admission.

Important Age Limit Update

JEE Main 2027 does not prescribe an age limit for appearing in the examination. Institute-specific admission requirements may still apply.

2. JEE Main 2027 Class 12 Passing Year Criteria

Candidates must have passed or be appearing in the Class 12 or equivalent qualifying examination in the prescribed years. The announced eligibility window for JEE Main 2027 includes the following candidates:

Class 12 StatusJEE Main 2027 Eligibility
Passed in 2025Eligible
Passed in 2026Eligible
Appearing in 2027Eligible
Passed in 2024 or earlierNot eligible under the announced passing-year window

The passing year generally means the year in which the candidate first passed the Class 12 or equivalent examination. Appearing for improvement examinations does not ordinarily change the original passing year. Candidates should verify the detailed conditions in the official information bulletin.

3. Is 75% Required in Class 12 for JEE Main 2027?

No. A minimum of 75% marks is not required merely to appear in the JEE Main 2027 examination. Candidates who meet the qualifying examination and passing-year conditions can appear even if their Class 12 aggregate is below 75%, subject to the applicable examination rules.

However, the Class 12 marks requirement is a separate issue for admission to certain institutes. In previous admission cycles, the NIT+ system used a requirement of 75% aggregate marks or placement in the top 20 percentile of the respective board for eligible candidates. The corresponding aggregate threshold was generally 65% for SC/ST candidates.

Some reports about the 2027 brochure have noted that the earlier 75% and top 20 percentile admission wording is not mentioned in the brochure. Therefore, candidates should not assume that the previous admission rule has either been removed or automatically continued. They must check the final JoSAA 2027 business rules and the admission criteria of their target institutes when published.

Important: Exam Eligibility vs College Admission

  • To appear in JEE Main: No minimum 75% Class 12 aggregate is required.
  • For NIT/IIIT/GFTI admission: Check the final 2027 JoSAA and institute-specific eligibility rules.
  • Previous admission benchmark: 75% aggregate or top 20 percentile; generally 65% for SC/ST candidates under the earlier NIT+ criteria.

4. What If You Have Less Than 75% in Class 12?

Students with less than 75% in Class 12 should not automatically conclude that they cannot appear in JEE Main 2027. The examination eligibility and institute admission eligibility are different.

A candidate may be eligible to take the JEE Main examination but may need to satisfy additional academic conditions for admission to a particular institute. Under the previous NIT+ admission framework, the top 20 percentile option was an alternative to the 75% aggregate requirement. Candidates should check the applicable 2027 admission rules before making decisions about improvement examinations or college choices.

5. Required Class 12 Subjects for JEE Main

The required subject combination depends on the programme and paper for which the candidate is applying. Candidates should carefully check the qualifying examination and subject requirements in the official 2027 information bulletin and the admission rules of their selected institutes.

  • B.E./B.Tech: Check the prescribed Physics, Mathematics and additional subject combination in the official bulletin.
  • B.Arch: Check the prescribed Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics requirements.
  • B.Planning: Mathematics is an important prescribed subject; verify the complete qualifying examination requirements.

6. Important Points for JEE Main 2027 Aspirants

  • There is no age limit for appearing in JEE Main 2027.
  • Class 12 passing years 2025 and 2026, and candidates appearing in 2027, fall within the announced eligibility window.
  • There is no minimum 75% requirement merely to appear for JEE Main.
  • Admission to NITs, IIITs and other institutes may have separate academic eligibility conditions.
  • Check the final JoSAA 2027 business rules before relying on previous admission criteria.
  • Use the official NTA website for the latest examination notices and information bulletin.
