JEE Main 2027 Class 12 Passing Year Eligibility Rules

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has specified the Class 12 passing-year eligibility criteria for JEE Main 2027. Candidates must check their qualifying examination year carefully before submitting the application form.

According to the JEE Main 2027 eligibility rules, candidates who passed Class 12 or an equivalent examination in 2025 or 2026, or are appearing in the qualifying examination in 2027, are eligible to appear for JEE Main 2027. Candidates who passed Class 12 in 2024 or earlier are not eligible.

JEE Main 2027 Passing Year: Quick Overview

  • Exam: JEE Main 2027
  • Conducting Authority: National Testing Agency (NTA)
  • Eligible Passing Year: 2025 and 2026
  • Appearing Candidates: Class 12 examination in 2027
  • 2024 or Earlier: Not eligible
  • Improvement Examination: Does not change the original first passing year
  • Age Limit: No age limit for appearing in JEE Main 2027
  • Official Website: jeemain.nta.nic.in

1. Which Class 12 Passing Years Are Eligible for JEE Main 2027?

NTA has specified the following qualifying examination years for JEE Main 2027:

Class 12 Passing Year JEE Main 2027 Eligibility
2025Eligible
2026Eligible
Appearing in 2027Eligible
2024 or EarlierNot Eligible

Candidates must satisfy the qualifying-year condition even if they meet the other educational requirements. Passing Class 12 in an earlier year does not become eligible simply because the candidate is applying for the first time in 2027.

2. What Is the First Passing Year Rule?

For JEE Main 2027, the passing year means the year in which the candidates Class 12 or equivalent examination result was declared as pass for the first time.

This rule is important for candidates who have appeared in additional subjects, improvement examinations or supplementary examinations. The original year in which the candidate first passed Class 12 is considered for eligibility.

Example: Additional Subject in a Later Year

A candidate passed Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology in 2025 and passed Mathematics as an additional subject in 2026. In this situation, 2025 will be considered the Class 12 passing year for JEE Main 2027 eligibility.

3. Does Improvement Examination Change the Passing Year?

No. Appearing in an improvement examination to increase Class 12 marks or percentage does not change the original first passing year.

For example, if a candidate passed Class 12 in 2024 and appeared for an improvement examination in 2025 or 2026, the original passing year remains 2024. The candidate will therefore not become eligible for JEE Main 2027 under the passing-year criteria.

4. Can Students Appearing in Class 12 in 2027 Apply?

Yes. Students appearing for their Class 12 or equivalent qualifying examination in 2027 are eligible to apply for JEE Main 2027.

Candidates appearing in the 2027 board examination can enter their Roll Number, Registration Number or Enrollment Number in the relevant fields of the JEE Main application form, as instructed by NTA.

5. What If You Passed Class 12 in 2024?

Candidates who passed Class 12 or an equivalent examination in 2024 or earlier are not eligible to appear in JEE Main 2027 under the announced qualifying-year criteria.

This applies even if the candidate did not appear in JEE Main in the previous years. The eligibility is based on the first year of passing the qualifying examination, not on the number of times the candidate has previously attempted the entrance examination.

6. Which Examinations Are Accepted as Class 12 Equivalent?

NTA recognises Class 12 and other equivalent qualifying examinations listed in the official Information Bulletin. These include:

  • The final examination of the 10+2 system conducted by a recognised Central or State Board, such as CBSE or CISCE.
  • Intermediate or two-year Pre-University examinations conducted by a recognised Board or University.
  • The final examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy.
  • Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling with a minimum of five subjects.
  • Other examinations recognised as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities, subject to the prescribed conditions.

Candidates with international qualifications, diplomas or other non-standard qualifications should carefully check the complete list of qualifying examinations and equivalence conditions in the official NTA Information Bulletin.
